Time is running out to join my 6-week writing class starting 2/1

Come and join me every Wednesday for six weeks starting 2/1 at The Writing Barn for, “Comic Book Writing: From First Draft to Final Pitch in Six Weeks”

In this six-week intensive study of comic books and the comic book industry we will discuss what it takes to develop your comic book from start to finish, from first draft to final pitch. After completing this course you will discover your own super power of transferring the ideas in your head to the pages of Marvel, DC, or other publishers of comics and graphic novels.

Topics we’ll cover:

  • Character Development
  • World Building
  • Scripting
  • Collaboration
  • The business of comics
  • Pitching your story

Be sure to bring a web ready device and be ready to write. We’ll be starting your comic book script in class.

Who Should take this course:

  • Writers interested in creating sequential art narratives (comic books, comic strips, graphic novels, etc.)
  • Writers of all genres
  • Writers interested in applying comics writing skills to other forms of writing (brief dialogue, visual storytelling, implied action, etc.)

HERE’S WHAT PEOPLE HAD TO SAY ABOUT MY class AT THE WRITING BARN:

“The Writing Barn’s workshop, Secret Origins: How to Write Comics and Graphic Novels, was a BLAST! Paul’s teaching style was incredibly fun and interactive–I felt right at home as an avid comic book reader and lover! Not only did he clearly explain the comic book making process and the players involved, but he also provided great anecdotes and advice about what it’s like to work in the comic book industry. Even though I initially signed up for the workshop with no expectations of making my own work, I am excited to start exploring writing my own comics in Paul’s upcoming series. If you’ve toyed with the idea of writing your own comics, or you already write and would like to share and receive feedback in a fun and welcoming environment, I highly recommend working with Paul and the Writing Barn.”
“Mr. Benjamin is a dynamic teacher. His insights on finding inspiration, the creative process, the state of the industry and nerd culture would be interesting to any fan of visual story telling.”

Austin Comic Con Appearance Schedule

Come find me this weekend at the Wizard World Austin convention! I’ll be there Saturday and Sunday, sharing a table with esteemed writer and editor Danny Fingeroth. It’ll be the first chance to get autographed copies of Disney Princess #5 and #6 live and in person!

I’ll also be on several panels that should be a blast!

1:00 Saturday
WORDS INTO PICTURES: HOW TO WRITE COMICS
with SPIDER-MAN’S TOM DeFALCO, THE RED HOOK’S DEAN HASPIEL, NO MERCY’S ALEX De CAMPI, DAREDEVIL’S CHARLES SOULE, HULK’S PAUL BENJAMIN and SPIDER-MAN’S DANNY FINGEROTH (ROOM 12)
Accomplished comics writers Tom DeFalco (Spider-Man; Thor), Dean Haspiel (The Red Hook; Beef With Tomato), Alex de Campi (Grindhouse; No Mercy), Charles Soule (Daredevil; Uncanny Inhumans), Paul Benjamin (The Hulk; Pantheon High) and Danny Fingeroth (How to Create Comics From Script to Print; Spider-Man) talk about how to put together a compelling comics story. Plus, they’ll answer your questions about both the creative and business sides of the comics writing profession, including how to find an artist to work with (hint: a comics convention is the number one place!) and how to write exciting dialogue!

3:30 Saturday
WHO’S THE MOST NEUROTIC SUPERHERO? INSIDE THE MINDS OF BATMAN, SPIDER-MAN, CAPTAIN AMERICA, JESSICA JONES AND MORE with BATMAN AND PSYCHOLOGY’S DR. TRAVIS LANGLEY, PSYCHOLOGIST DR, ANTHONY BEAN, THE GEEK HANDBOOK’S ALEX LANGLEY, THE HULK’S PAUL BENJAMIN, UT’S DEREK ROYAL & SPIDER-MAN’S DANNY FINGEROTH (ROOM 12)
Ever since the dawn of Marvel’s “superheroes with real problems,” costumed adventurers have been letting their psychological damage show. Spider-Man’s guilt and insecurity, Batman’s tango with trauma, Captain America’s survivor’s guilt and Jessica Jones’ smorgasbord of symptoms are just a few of the mental challenges that modern superheroes deal with. Today, psychologists Travis Langley (Captain America vs. Iron Man: Freedom, Security, Psychology) and Anthony Bean (videogaming expert), author Alex Langley (The Geek Handbook), writer Paul Benjamin (Spider-Man),educator and blogger Derek Royal (The Comics Alternative) and comics writer and historian Danny Fingeroth (Superman on the Couch: What Superheroes Really Tell Us About Ourselves and Our Society) discuss the psychological challenges a variety of heroes (and maybe some villains) deals with.

5:30 Saturday
THE MARVEL LEGACY: THE 77-YEAR HISTORY OF THE HOUSE OF IDEAS, FROM THE BEGINNING TO DEADPOOL TO CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR with SPIDER-MAN’S DANNY FINGEROTH AND THE HULK’S PAUL BENJAMIN (BALLROOM E
)
In 1939, Marvel Comics #1 debuted, unleashing The Sub-Mariner and The Human Torch on the world, and launching what would come to be known as the Marvel Universe. Today, Danny Fingeroth (Deadly Foes of Spider-Man; The Stan Lee Universe) and Paul Benjamin (Amazing Spider-Man; Marvel Heroes MMO) present an illustrated tour through the many decades of comics, movies and TV series that make up the phenomenon that is Marvel.
